This mural was born out of walking tours, photographic studies and careful observation of the Rhodes Peninsula’s layers—its riverside landscapes, bustling parks, flora and fauna, cultural diversity, and the geometric rhythm of its built environment. Each element references a local landmark, from the ferry passing by the waters of Mill Park to the mangroves of Lewis Berger Park, the play spaces of Foreshore Park and the energy of the Recreation Centre itself. At the heart of the mural sits an exploded visual map of the Centre, designed as a playful wayfinding tool. This map immerses the viewer them in a joyful narrative of Rhodes.

Playforms is a set of 12 sculptural pictograms of activities that can be undertaken at Rhodes Recreation Centre. Inspired by the Sydney 2000 Olympics pictograms and the Utzon Tapestry at the Sydney Opera House, Playforms adds movement and colour to Level 1 of the Centre. The pictograms are surrounded by floral patterns and organic shapes and the work responds beautifully to the Rhodes Recreation Centre vision of ‘Play, Perform, Reflect, Repeat!’.
